Halton hills driving tour

This 90-minute drive takes much longer if you stop and linger at the sites along the way.

A driving tour along the back roads of Halton Hills is a great way to experience the diversity of the area firsthand. This 60 km driving tour begins on Dublin Line in the southwest corner of Halton Hills. As you go north on this dead-end road, you can view the Niagara Escarpment as it begins its hulking diagonal division of Halton Hills. This two-km initial stretch dramatically shows the many uses of Escarpment lands. The entrance to Dufferin Quarry is on the west side, where you can see the Bruce Trail bridge that crosses a gap in the Escarpment created by quarry operations. A short distance further along you reach the rich woods of the Esquesing Conservation Area, followed by the green Greystone golf course that brushes the Escarpment’s talus slopes.

From here the tour heads north to Chudleigh’s apple farm and then over a causeway at the Scotch Block water-control reservoir. At the edge of the watershed, you can go up and down the Escarpment, past the Acton Quarry and into Acton. From this point, you enter the neighbouring Credit River watershed through the charming communities of Limehouse, Glen Williams and Norval.   A short hike on the Bruce Trail at Limehouse reveals intriguing lime-kiln ruins and dramatic limestone fissures. The driving tour ends through rich agricultural lands complete with several excellent pick-your-own farms.

Nature Calls  [Blue Jays]
Pick-your-own farms are often as much fun and as delightfully colourful as their products are tasty. With a bounty of richly hued fruits, acres of dancing blossoms and a nearly endless parade of greenery, the farmscape is also a great place  to experience nature. Listen for the sounds of children having fun on hay bales, in fields of colourful flowers, and among rows of sunflowers higher than they are. These are also great spots to see Monarch, Black Swallowtail and Viceroy Butterflies flitter among the blossoms in search of nectar. Watch, too, for migrating Blue Jays belting out their jay, jay cries as they touch down on sunflower landing pads.

Tips [to enjoy your hike]
There are some great hiking areas in Halton Hills.  Take time to explore these trails along the way.
