The 472-hectare park includes extensive wetlands, forests, fields and a 202-hectare water control  reservoir that was built in 1966. The conservation area is a unique blend of wildlife sanctuary and environmental education centre. The park includes 16 km of nature trails, a demonstration sugar bush, visitors centre, a wildlife walkway with bison and birds of prey and a children’s PlayBarn.  Along the Lakeshore Lookout Trail, visitors can observe some of the hundreds of bird species recorded at the conservation area. The Pioneer Creek and Nature Trivia Trails also include unique features that convey the natural history of the park. During March and April, visitors can enjoy the first taste of spring at the Mountsberg Sugar Bush.

Most Famous Person to Use the Trails
Canadian astronaut and photographer Dr. Roberta Bondar walked the trails at Mountsberg in 1994  during the official opening of the Raptor Centre.

Nature Calls  [Yellow-bellied Sapsucker]
When you walk quietly through the sugar bush during a good sap run, you may hear the tapping sound of one of nature’s creatures that is very interested in the maple harvest. Look closely and you may see the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. This small woodpecker drills orderly rows of holes into a tree and then laps up the sap with its brush-like tongue.
